Elliott ready to lead Black Cats to promotion
Sunderland's Irish striker Stephen Elliott is backing his side to win a battle of nerves to clinch their return to the Premiership.
The 21-year-old came off the bench to drag the Black Cats back into yesterday’s 2-2 draw at Ipswich.
Should the Wearsiders win at home to Leicester on Saturday and Ipswich do any less at Leeds, Mick McCarthy’s men will return to the top flight after a two-season absence, and Republic of Ireland international Elliott admits the pressure could tell for all concerned.
“People are bound to be a bit tense with so much at stake,” he said. “It is down to who handles it.
“I do not think nerves played a part in us not winning at Ipswich. A draw would have been a decent result before the game, it is just the way it went at the end that makes it disappointing.
“The other two teams need us to slip up. In the cold light of day, Ipswich will be the most disappointed. They need someone else to slip up and were ahead in the game.
“We have a big home game now and we have to look forward to it.”
