Davis shows he still has desire
Steve Davis may not be a genuine Crucible title contender anymore, but he’s still the ultimate competitor.
And he showed his determination last night by reaching the last 16 of the £1.2m (€1.8m) Embassy World Championship.
Davis defeated Northern Ireland rival Gerard Greene 10-9 to record his first win in Sheffield for five years.
A realisation that his powers are waning and a desire to quicken the tempo has helped Davis keep pace with the younger generation.
He said: “As you get older it’s harder to cope with the tension. You are walking a tightrope of muscular co-ordination which is easier for a 20-year-old to cope with.
“That’s why Tom Watson was not as good a putter towards the end of his career.
“But because I know what’s happening, I’ve come to terms with it and I’m still enjoying it.
“I can still turn a few tricks or I wouldn’t be here.”
