Bolger has sights set on Classic

15/04/2005 - 10:38:20
Jim Bolger confirmed today that a return to Newmarket is firmly on the agenda for Thursday’s bet365 Craven Stakes winner Democratic Deficit.

The Soviet Star colt prevailed by a head from the highly-rated Rob Roy in a tight finish and will now take his chance in the UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas back at HQ at the end of this month.

“I’m very happy with my horse,” the trainer told At The Races. “I was very happy with him going to Newmarket yesterday and my staff have reported him well this morning so, all being well, he will be back there.”

Bookmaker reaction to the victory was mixed and he is available at as big as 25-1 with some firms.

“His odds wouldn’t influence me one way or the other. If the horse is well on the day I would expect to have him line up,” Bolger added.

The trainer was also quick to praise the ride of Kevin Manning in a race where Rob Roy and close fourth Iceman met with traffic problems.

“He only had a trouble-free run on the outside because Kevin probably won the race in the first furlong,” he said.

“He was in between horses and having a hard time and Kevin opted to take him back, which was very sensible. Then he had a clear run on the outside after that.”
