Number of BSE cases has halved in past year
15/04/2005 - 12:39:06The number of BSE cases being detected in Ireland has more than halved in the past year, according to figures published today by the Department of Agriculture.
The department said just one case of the disease was detected in an 11-year-old dairy cow in Wexford.
It said brought the total number of cases so far this year to 23, compared to 57 in the same period last year and 80 in the equivalent period in 2003.
The department said the age profile of animals infected with BSE showed that controls introduced in 1996 and early 1997 were proving effective.
