Nursing home compensation may be paid this year

The Tánaiste and Minister for Health has told the Dáil that compensation payments for people who were illegally charged for nursing home accommodation could be issued by the end of this year.

Mary Harney said she was planning to introduce a number of legislative changes to deal with the illegal charges before the Dáil breaks for its summer holiday.

She said compensation payments to medical card holders who were illegally charged nursing home fees could then be forthcoming by the autumn.
