Hoops to find out fate in High Court today

12/04/2005 - 09:12:13
Shamrock Rovers will find out today whether the High Court will put the club into examinership after the judge asked for clarification on a number of issues.

Rovers are over €2.36m in debt and owe five figure sums to the eircom League, FAI and Revenue Commissioners, while the club’s supporters trust, the 400 club, had to play the players wages last week.

The 400 club voted last night to support the club’s application for an examinership which will see the trust effectively bankroll the day-to-day running of the club during a 100 day period while the court appointed examiner appraises looks at how to restructure the club's debt and seeks new investors.

Of most immediate concern to Rovers is their failure to meet the schedule of payments to the Revenue Commissioners.

The club still owes €540,000 in tax and a schedule of payments was agreed with the Revenue Commissioners at the start of the year to ensure the club received a tax clearance certificate – a document necessary as part of a club licence – needed by any club to take part in the eircom League.

As Rovers have now defaulted on payments, the tax clearance cert can be withdrawn which could lead to Rovers losing their club licence which would force them to drop out of the eircom League.
