Six held in NI money laundering investigation

12/04/2005 - 13:49:51
Six people were arrested today as part of a major investigation into money laundering through illegal dumping in Northern Ireland.

One of those held was detained in England, police said.

Money was also recovered in a series of searches in Belfast and the Derrylin area of Fermanagh.

Detectives from the PSNI were involved in the arrests which follows a lengthy intelligence-led operation against criminals making millions from illegal dumping on both sides of the Irish border.

The Department of Environment in Northern Ireland set up a special team to deal with growing levels of illegal dumping after it emerged that up to two illegal sites were being discovered each week containing tens of thousands of tonnes of waste from homes and businesses across Ireland.

Last September three truckloads of waste were seized in a joint cross border police operation.
