SIPTU and Gama to resume talks on low-pay controversy

08/04/2005 - 07:36:59
SIPTU and the Turkish construction firm Gama are due to resume talks today aimed at resolving a row over how the company pays its workers in Ireland.

It emerged earlier this year that Gama's Turkish workforce in Ireland was being paid extremely low wages.

However, the company subsequently said the remainder of their pay had been lodged in special bank accounts in the Netherlands.

The workers say they were never told about these accounts and have no idea how to access the cash.

Talks on the matter ended without agreement last night, but Gama is expected to provide details today of how employees can access the bank accounts set up for them.
