Reform of social welfare payments 'could damage An Post'
08/04/2005 - 11:17:42A government plan to distribute all social welfare payments electronically could reportedly cause further damage to An Post's financial situation.
Reports this morning said the Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition was considering a new system that would see all payments being distributed through bank and building society accounts.
The reports said the removal of the distribution contract from An Post would cost the company €50m annually, which could in turn lead to job losses.
The matter is due to be discussed next week in talks between Social and Family Affairs Minister Seamus Brennan and Communications Minister Noel Dempsey.
