Irish Ferries 'must compensate other Filpina workers'

08/04/2005 - 07:26:14
The International Transport Federation has demanded that Irish Ferries compensate two more Filipina workers who were hired by the company on extremely low wages.

The women were hired to work on the MV Normandy ferry on similar contracts to that of Salvacion Orge, another Filipina who was being paid just €1 an hour on the Isle of Inishmore ferry.

Ms Orge is believed to have received €25,000 as part of a confidential settlement negotiated between Irish Ferries and SIPTU last month.

However, the other two Filipinas were returned to their homeland without any union intervention and the ITF, which says it has been empowered to act for the women, is now demanding that they be paid on similar terms to Ms Orge.
