McDowell may introduce fine for refusing to attend inquests

Justice Minister Michael McDowell is reportedly considering the introduction of legislation that would see people fined up to €2,000 for refusing to attend inquests.

Reports this morning said the minister was expected to bring proposals on the matter to the Cabinet in the coming weeks.

Coroners throughout the country have expressed frustration at the refusal of key witnesses to attend several inquests over the past number of years.

Under current legislation, a person can only be fined €6.35 for refusing to attend.
