Zimbabwe keeps British journalists locked up

Zimbabwe’s government today denied bail to two British journalists who were arrested for allegedly violating immigration laws and working without a licence.

Toby Harnden and Julian Simmonds, both of the Sunday Telegraph, were arrested near a polling station during last week’s general election. If convicted they could be jailed for three years.

A magistrate yesterday ordered that they be released on bail of €124, but prosecutors produced a government order demanding they be kept in Harare’s remand prison.

The two already have been served with deportation notices.
