Kenny impressed with Beckett's form

03/04/2005 - 13:14:24
Derry City manager Stephen Kenny has praised the recent form of experienced striker Gary Beckett.

Kenny believed that 31-year-old Beckett was on his way out of the Brandywell when he took over last season but the Derry stalwart's performances have forced the manager to admit he was wrong.

“Gary Beckett is revitalised. When I took over, I genuinely didn’t know whether he’d have a future here,” said Kenny.

“He’s a much better player than I thought he was to be honest. I knew he had a good season in ’97 but I didn’t think his scoring ratio was the best.

“But when he’s not playing, we miss him. He does tremendous work and when he drops off, he causes any team problems.”
