New sports stadium to be built on former Maze Prison site

31/03/2005 - 08:31:14
The North's planned new sports stadium is set to be built on the site of the former Maze Prison after a British minister confirmed that the location south of Belfast was the only one still under consideration.

Up to €1bn of public and private money is expected to be spent in the next five years to convert the site into a 35,000-seater stadium and a business park.

An arts centre and an international equestrian arena are also planned for the site, while the prison hospital where 10 IRA hunger-strikers died in 1981 could be converted into an international centre for "conflict transformation".

The British government is due to begin seeking tenders for the development in the coming weeks.
