New alliance launches campaign against EU Constitution
An alliance of Irish political groups and activists has launched a national campaign of opposition to the proposed EU Constitution.
The document, which was drawn up following negotiations between the member states, is designed to replace all existing EU treaties.
It also includes provisions for an appointed EU president and foreign minister and abolishes national vetoes in a range of new areas, excluding foreign policy, defence and taxation.
Those behind the campaign launched today have claimed the constitution will create EU military arrangements that compromise Irish neutrality.
They have also claimed that it will drive the EU further away from the social justice agenda that the union is ostensibly pursuing.
Ireland is one of several European countries due to hold a referendum on the document before it can be ratified.
