Colombia Three trial judge criticises 'questionable' evidence

31/03/2005 - 07:31:46
One of three judges who oversaw the conviction of the so-called Colombia Three last year has questioned the evidence that was allowed in court.

In a dissenting opinion, Judge Jorge Enrique Torres said much of the evidence used to convict James Monaghan, Martin McCauley and Niall Connolly was "questionable".

Torres was on the three-judge panel that convicted the three Irishmen last December and sentenced them to 17 years in prison, overturning their earlier acquittal on charges of training anti-government rebels.

Supporters of the three men, who are in hiding from the Colombian authorities, have expressed hope that their conviction can be overturned in light of Torres' comments.
