Al-Jazeera screens ‘kidnapped journalists’

30/03/2005 - 23:16:01
The Al-Jazeera satellite TV channel today broadcast a videotape said to be showing three kidnapped Romanian journalists and a fourth unidentified person.

The station said the four were held by an unnamed militant group.

The four were seated on the ground in a room, with blanket hung behind them. Two men – their faces covered with scarves – were pointing guns at them.

A woman in the group had a yellowish headscarf wrapped around her head. She spoke into a small microphone but the station did not broadcast the sound.

The tape’s authenticity could not be verified.

The station said no demands were made.

The missing journalists were abducted late on Monday near their Baghdad hotel. They were seized after interviewing Iraq’s interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi.

One used her cellphone to send a text message to her newsroom: “Help. This is not a joke. We’ve been kidnapped.”
