30/03/2005 - 15:35:01
Gardaí in Donegal have set up a special unit in response to violence in the Traveller community.

It is investigating five separate incidents over the last two months in Letterkenny, the most serious of which happened on Sunday.

An altercation between four members of the Traveller community on Sunday afternoon left a man in his 20s in intensive care after he was stabbed and attacked with a pitch fork and slash hook.

While the injured male is expected to fully recover from his injuries the incident has sparked concern amongst the local community that the feud will escalate.

Local councillors has urged those within the community to exercise any influence they may have to resolve the conflict.

Garda Superintendent James Gallagher, who is heading up the newly formed special unit has expressed his fear that someone will be killed as the feud escalates.
