Majority of first-time mothers do not take folic acid

The majority of first-time mothers in Ireland do not take folic acid, according to research published today by the Royal College of Surgeons.

The college said 70% of first-time mothers do not take the supplement, despite its proven ability to prevent birth defects.

Women are advised to take folic acid in the months before a planned pregnancy and in the first 28 days of pregnancy.
