INTO slams govt failure to reduce primary class sizes
30/03/2005 - 07:32:24The Irish National Teachers Organisation has criticised the Government's failure to deliver on its promise to reduce primary school class sizes.
Speaking at the union's annual conference in Galway yesterday, INTO officials warned that the curriculum could not be implemented if current teacher-pupil ratios continue.
General secretary John Carr said Ireland would lose out economically if the matter is not addressed.
"This is an important issue for Ireland if we are going to compete in Europe in 2010 in the knowledge-based Europe," he said.
"It is vital that we give our children an even break in relation to the children in the rest of the EU and the way to do it is to ensure that our kids are in the same class sizes as children from other EU countries."
