Disabled man 'travelled to Switzerland for assisted suicide'

30/03/2005 - 07:49:20
An Irishman who had been severely disabled since an accident several years ago reportedly took his own life via an assisted suicide in Switzerland late last year.

Reports this morning said the man’s family brought him from Dublin to Zurich, where he killed himself with the assistance of the Swiss right-to-die organisation Dignitas.

The reports said the man, who was in his 30s and wheelchair-bound, was unable to feed or clothe himself since suffered brain and neck injuries in an accident.

He also had a tube in his stomach as he was unable to swallow and was fully dependent on nursing staff.

His family reportedly took him from a Dublin hospital late last year for a routine weekend visit.

When he did not return as planned, the family told hospital authorities that he had passed away in Switzerland.
