Hanafin vows to make educational disadvantage a priority

29/03/2005 - 12:48:00
Education Minister Mary Hanafin has vowed to make tackling educational disadvantage her main priority in the coming year.

Earlier today, Ms Hanafin announced a new five-year plan to address problems of disadvantage among school pupils in poorer areas.

She promised that additional resources and teachers would be provided under the plan.

"This will mean more children in smaller classes in the most disadvantaged schools," she said.

"There will be better supports for our teachers and for our principals in order to retain them in these schools and a better focus on literacy and numeracy programmes that actually work.

"All of this, right across the sector, both first and second level, will involve an extra €40m on top of a very substantial amount of money that's already been spent and 300 extra posts across the education system generally."
