IBEC demands fast-tracking of incinerator projects

29/03/2005 - 07:47:46
The employers' body IBEC has demanded the fast-tracking of incinerator projects throughout the country in an effort to halt spiralling waste disposal costs for businesses.

The organisation said businesses spent €800m on waste disposal last year, compared to just €32m in 1995, and further increases could cripple certain companies.

In a four-point plan aimed at preventing such increases, IBEC said incinerators should be built as a matter of urgency.

Spokesman Brendan Butler said: "Every modern economy in Europe and throughout the world uses incineration as a very healthy part of their waste management arrangement and we're calling for a similar regime to be introduced in Ireland."
