Johnson builds towards Aintree
Howard Johnson has had two Grand National-style fences built as he prepares his big-race possibles for a tilt at Aintree.
The County Durham trainer has last season’s Scottish National winner Grey Abbey and Ballybough Rasher in the John Smith’s-sponsored spectacular on April 9.
Johnson’s assistant Ray Hawkey said today: “Grey Abbey is fine. Howard has built two Aintree-style fences at home, so he must fancy going there. He’s seriously considering it, but Grey Abbey hasn’t been over them yet. Ballybough Rasher will go.”
Grey Abbey, fifth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup on his latest start, would have to carry top weight of 11st 12lb in the world’s greatest steeplechase. He is a 20-1 chance with the leading bookmakers.
Johnson’s stable jockey Graham Lee is awaiting a decision on Grey Abbey’s participation as he also has the option of bidding to repeat last year’s victory with Amberleigh House, trained by Ginger McCain.
Lee partnered the 13-year-old in a schooling session at Haydock Park yesterday.
Ballybough Rasher, who has 11st 1lb, is a best-priced 100-1.
