Bomb kills one, injures three in Pakistan

A home-made bomb exploded at the main square of a remote town in south-western Pakistan, killing one passer-by and slightly injuring three others, police said today.

The explosion occurred last night in Naushki, a town about 125 miles south-west of Quetta, the capital of south-western Baluchistan province, local police chief Ghulam Yasin said.

The blast also damaged four cars, four shops and a government office in the square, Yasin said, adding that the bomb had been planted in a drain.

No one claimed responsibility and no arrests were reported in connection with the explosion.

Baluchistan has been the scene in recent months of small-scale bombings and rocket attacks targeting rail roads, security forces, gas pipelines and power lines.

Authorities blame renegade tribesmen for the unrest in the impoverished region.

Local tribesmen have been angered by the government plans to build new military garrisons and they are also accused of pressing demands for increase in royalty payments for resources extracted in their territories with attacks against the government.

Saturday’s explosion came a day after at least three soldiers were wounded when suspected tribesman fired some 12 rockets at their headquarters in Barakhan, a town about 230 miles east of Quetta.

The troops returned fire but it was not known whether there were any casualties among the assailants, said Lt. Col. Rizwan Malik, a spokesman for the Frontier Corps troops.
