Postlethwaite downplays Spielberg's praise

27/03/2005 - 12:56:49
Actor Pete Postlethwaite blames gushing comments Steven Spielberg made about his acting on the unjustifiably high expectations movie-makers now have of him.

Postlethwaite found a soulmate in Spielberg on the sets of The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Amistad in 1997, but the Irish star wishes the director hadn't hailed him "the best actor in the world" - because it's proved to be a major burden in his career.

He says: "That quote is an albatross around my neck. What I say to people is that he has been misquoted. What he did say was: 'The thing with Pete is he thinks he's the best actor in the world.'

"We got on very well. We did Jurassic Park together first. We were both the same age and we had both just had new babies. It was good, we enjoyed it."
