Allen: 'I'm no intellectual'
Woody Allen is frustrated by cinema-goers who jump to conclusions about the real-life personalities of film stars based on their appearances on-screen.
The director argues that costume plays an integral part in creating a character, but because his trademark glasses are ever present on his face, people falsely assume he's an intellect.
And he's urged fans to realise that visual stereotypes do not answer questions about his personality - or that of any human being, famous or otherwise.
He says: "You look at Charlie Chaplin and think: 'He's the little tramp,' but he was not at all. He was cultivated and driven. Groucho Marx was not that leering guy you saw on screen. He was very intelligent and well-read.
"I had it worse because Groucho Marx and Chaplin got into costumes. I don't. I'm the guy with the T-shirt and beer watching the baseball game. But people don't think that. They think: 'He's got glasses, he's intellectual.'"
