Prince Rainier's health worsening

26/03/2005 - 11:48:48
The health of Prince Rainier III of Monaco continues to worsen, a health bulletin issued by the principality’s palace said today.

Despite appropriate health care and control of his lung infection, the palace said the prince’s heart, lung and kidney functions were gradually worsening and the prognosis remains “very reserved”.

Rainier's health "does not stop worsening", said the palace statement, signed by three doctors.

The previous bulletin from his doctors, released Friday, said Rainier remained in “worrisome” health, and had been hooked up to a respirator with heart, kidney and breathing problems.

On Friday his son and heir, Prince Albert, appeared on a palace balcony before subjects praying for the life of Rainier, one of the world’s longest-serving rulers.

Doctors refused to say whether the 81-year-old ruler of Europe’s longest-ruling dynasty might survive. He has ruled the Mediterranean principality since 1949.
