Candystripes could be sweet in cup, says Delaney

24/03/2005 - 13:07:04
Derry City defender Clive Delaney has insisted this will be a transition season for the Candystripes but a Cup success should not be ruled out.

Delaney was part of the Derry side that got off to a flying start to the season with a 2-0 win against title challengers Drogheda United though the giant 25-year-old believes that a tilt at the League crown may have to wait until next season.

He said: "This is a transitional period and establishing yourself as a serious title contender takes time. If we bring everything that we have worked on during the pre-season into the games this year and give ourselves a platform in November from which we can build a team that is challenging
for the title, then I believe we will have had a successful season."

However, Delaney is also aiming for the FAI Cup having twice gone close to glory before. "Having reached the final of the FAI Cup with St Pats and the semi-final with Derry in the last two years, I hope to go one better this year."
