McAleese voices hopes for nuclear crisis solution

23/03/2005 - 07:09:31
Visiting Irish president Prof Mary McAleese backed a peaceful resolution to the North Korean nuclear crisis during a meeting with South Korean leader Roh Moo-hyun, his office said today.

Prof McAleese also expressed hope for the creation of a co-operative structure among Asia-Pacific nations similar to the European Union, President Roh’s office said in a statement.

International efforts are under way to bring North Korea back to negotiations aimed at persuading it to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

Six-nation disarmament talks – which involve the two Koreas, US, China, Japan and Russia – have been stalled since June.
