ICTU condemns Bank of Ireland plan to shed 2,100 jobs
23/03/2005 - 12:22:10The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has condemned Bank of Ireland’s plans to lay off 2,100 workers as part of a cost-cutting programme.
The bank announced the move yesterday, saying it wanted to reduce its annual costs by €120m within the next four years.
Around 10 branches are also due to be closed as part of the plan, which ICTU general secretary David Begg has described as “inexcusable”.
He said he was disgusted that the bank was engaging in such cutbacks at a time when it was making massive profits.
Mr Begg said Bank of Ireland’s attitude showed that it was putting the interests of shareholders ahead of its staff, customers, small businesses and local communities.
