ESRI recommends special property tax on holiday homes
23/03/2005 - 07:50:20The Government's economic think-tank has recommended that a special property tax be imposed on holiday homes that remain vacant for most of the year.
The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) said tax reliefs encouraging investment in holiday homes should be scrapped and a special tax or other measure should be imposed to recoup the cost of the infrastructure needed to serve the buildings.
The ESRI said holiday home developments, particularly in the border, midlands and western region, were pushing up house prices for locals and pricing them out of the market.
