PDs to resist publicly-owned second terminal in Dublin
The Progressive Democrats will reportedly resist any plans for a publicly-owned second terminal at Dublin Airport.
Reports this morning said the matter was due to be discussed at a Cabinet meeting later today, when Transport Minister Martin Cullen will outline proposals relating to Dublin Airport and Aer Lingus.
A Sunday newspaper has claimed that Mr Cullen and the Taoiseach had reached a deal with the trade union movement whereby Aer Lingus could be part-privatised to finance its future development.
In return, the Government has reportedly agreed that the second terminal planned for Dublin Airport would be in public rather than private ownership.
This morning’s reports said the Tánaiste Mary Harney would oppose this as the PDs want the second terminal to be in private hands so it can compete with the existing facility at the airport.
This is also the position of Ryanair, which has been canvassing several government ministers in recent years as part of its campaign for a privately-owned second terminal.
