Gardaí advised not to participate in cross-border scheme

22/03/2005 - 16:32:16
The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) is advising its members not to participate in the scheme which allows gardaí to work north of the border.

The AGSI is withdrawing co-operation from the protocol, which was only recently signed by police chiefs north and south and the British and Irish governments.

The Association said that it is not economically viable and that it would fear for the safety of gardaí, although it has not specified from where it believes the threat would come.

It is understood that less than 20 gardaí have availed of the scheme since it was launched last month.
