Consumers Association condemns planned BoI cutbacks
22/03/2005 - 13:05:38The Consumers Association has condemned Bank of Ireland's plans to lay off 2,100 workers and close a number of branches as part of a cost-cutting plan.
The bank announced the move this morning, saying it wanted to reduce its annual costs by €120m within four years.
Responding to the cutbacks, the Consumers Association said the branch closures would particularly affect vulnerable customers who are unable to use telephone and internet banking.
It also said consumers would experience a reduced-quality service without any reduction in charges.
"It's all in benefit and favour of the bank and nothing for the customer," spokesman Dermot Jewell said.
