Mariah demands late-night red carpet treatment

22/03/2005 - 08:35:31
Curvaceous singer Mariah Carey demanded a candle-lit red carpet for her journey from the limousine to her London hotel door, after jetting into Britain at 2.15am on Sunday.

The Butterfly star's aides turned up at the capital's luxurious Baglioni hotel at 2am to ensure that everything was in place, and were horrified to find the red carpet was not in evidence.

After aides explained to hotel staff that Carey's arrival is always heralded by a red carpet lined with white candles, the pop beauty - who is in London promoting her new album The Emancipation of Mimi - circled the block with her entourage as the requirements were hurriedly put in place.

But if staff were taken aback by the last-minute command, they concealed it well. The hotel operations manager says: "It's not unheard of for us to rush out the red carpet for a guest. We're used to dealing with high-profile guests and everyone has their own requirements."

The 34-year-old pop star and her entourage have booked 15 rooms in the hotel, costing up to $3,800 (€2,900) each per night for their three-night stay.
