Kerr aiming for away-day success

21/03/2005 - 17:29:15
Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr believes away form could determine which countries qualify from European qualifying group four for the 2006 World Cup.

Ireland travel to Israel this weekend, level with both their hosts and France, having collected eight points from four games.

Both countries secured stalemates in Paris earlier in the campaign and with Switzerland also unbeaten, returning from their travels with points may prove decisive for the Republic.

“I’m rarely disappointed if we draw away and win at home,” said Kerr.

“Most league tables are won by teams that can win at home, draw away and sometimes win away.

“So the team that can win away matches will have more of an impact on the group.

“It means our approach will be to have a go. We don’t see any sense in sitting back and letting teams come on to us and try to play on the break.

“I don’t think we’re comfortable with that way of thinking, nor do we have the physical strength for that way of playing, so we’ve got to go and play and get the best result.”

Sheffield United midfielder Alan Quinn, 25, misses Saturday’s clash in Tel Aviv with an ankle injury.
