Gardaí bid to get man from crane

Gardaí were today trying to persuade a man who climbed up a 300-foot crane in Limerick city to return to safety.

The man was spotted on the crane on the Dock Road at around 3.30am. Gardaí, fire brigade and ambulance personnel were called to the scene.

A Henry Street Garda spokesman said that the man had become extremely cold but had so far refused to come down.

He added that the man had displayed no signs of being intoxicated.

The man is thought to be deaf. He is communicating with a member of the fire brigade on the ground through sign language.

The crane, which was being used to construct a new business premises, is overhanging the Dock Road and traffic restrictions have been imposed.
