DUP and UUP to discuss possible unionist election pact
18/03/2005 - 08:08:18Representatives of the DUP and UUP are due to meet later today to discuss a possible unionist electoral pact ahead of the upcoming British general election.
The meeting was arranged by the Orange Order and is due to take place at the religious organisation's headquarters in east Belfast.
DUP leader Ian Paisley and UUP leader David Trimble are both expected to attend.
Although the parties are currently bitter enemies, united unionist candidates could see off challenges from the SDLP and Sinn Féin in two constituencies - Fermanagh/South Tyrone and South Belfast.
The DUP and UUP also want to prevent Sinn Féin from becoming the largest Northern party represented at Westminster, which is a possibility in the May election.
