Champions Shels needed a late penalty to escape an opening night defeat to newly promoted UCD.
College frustrated Shels from the start, restricting them to an Owen Heary header that scraped the bar on 16 minutes.
Composed and with a good shape about them, UCD defended well and struck for the lead on 63 minutes.
New signing Damien Dupuy got a flick header to Mick O’Donnell’s corner to find the back of the net and shock the out-of-sorts Reds.
But Stuart Byrne rescued Shels on 86 minutes when cracking home a spot kick after Glen Crowe had been taken down by Conor Kenna.
