Volume of retail sales up more than 5% in January

The volume of retail sales in Ireland this January was more than 5% higher than the same month last year, according to figures released today by the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO said the value of such sales (which takes account of price increases) was up 6.3% in the same period.

It said the motor trade accounted for much of the increase, but sales were also up 3.7% in department stores.

The largest decrease in sales between January 2004 and January 2005 was a 6.3% drop in the electrical goods sector.
