Cheltenham geared up for watering

15/03/2005 - 08:49:26
Officials at Cheltenham admit there is a “strong possibility” they may have to water the track tomorrow evening.

The ground remains good, despite two millimetres of rain on Sunday night, and a mainly dry, warm week is in store.

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse said yesterday: “The ground is drying out very slowly but, although the weathermen are predicting no rain on Tuesday, there is an 80 per cent chance that we could get between five and six millimetres throughout Wednesday.

“However, temperatures are also due to rise, going up to 18 or 19 degrees by Friday, so should the rain not materialise, there must be a strong possibility that we will have to water on Wednesday evening.

“The trainers who have walked the course have been very complimentary and reckon it is lovely ground, and the fact that we have six yards of fresh turf on the inside to save for Friday is a big bonus.”
