Shameless steals UK Tv awards show

15/03/2005 - 23:49:54
The man behind the Channel 4 drama Shameless stole the show at the Royal Television Society Awards tonight.

Paul Abbott, who devised the drama, walked away with a hat trick of awards for best drama series, best writer and the judges’ award for outstanding contribution to TV drama over two decades.

At a ceremony in London, the man whose career has included working on hits like Cracker and Clocking Off, and who started his career in Coronation Street 21 years ago, said that the judges’ award had left him “absolutely speechless”.

The night was a good one for the BBC, which walked away with the most awards.

But its flagship soap EastEnders lost out to Coronation Street in the best soap category.

The BBC’s ballroom dancing show Strictly Come Dancing took best entertainment over Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway (ITV) and Derren Brown’s Tricks Of The Mind (Channel 4).
