Scuffles as Annan and Abbas meet

Hundreds of people protesting against Israel’s West Bank separation barrier tried to push into a walled West Bank compound today as UN chief Kofi Annan held talks with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

The crowd was held back by Palestinian policemen guarding the main gate to the government compound in Ramallah.

The demonstrators scuffled with policemen.

Annan met with Abbas a day after holding talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

On Tuesday, he is to attend the inauguration of a new Holocaust museum in Jerusalem.
