Scientists to install Indonesia tsunami warning system
14/03/2005 - 15:48:55Indonesian and German scientists will begin installing a tsunami early warning system in the Indian Ocean by October, ministers from both countries said today.
The network, expected to cost €44m, will use sensors on the ocean floor to transmit information about earthquakes and giant waves via buoys and satellites to an observation station on the coast.
“We may not be able to predict natural disasters, but we can work hard to reduce their effects,” said German Research Minister Edelgard Bulmahn after signing a cooperation agreement with her Indonesian counterpart.
