Senator Ted Kennedy refuses to meet Adams on US visit

14/03/2005 - 07:33:45
US senator Ted Kennedy has refused to meet with Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams this week due to ongoing IRA activity.

A spokesperson for the US politician said he had declined to meet with Mr Adams "given the IRA's ongoing criminal activity and contempt for the rule of law".

The snub follows the Bush administration's decision not to invite Sinn Féin or any other Northern parties to this year's St Patrick's Day celebration at the White House due to the ongoing lack of progress in the peace process.

Mr Kennedy's decision to ignore Sinn Féin will put increased pressure on the party, which is already suffering a major backlash from all sides due to the IRA's alleged involvement in the Northern Bank raid and the murder of Belfast man Robert McCartney.
