SDLP in bid to bring peace talks back on track

14/03/2005 - 06:59:34
SDLP party leader Mark Durkan is meeting with the Taoiseach today to discuss the state of the peace process in the aftermath of the killing of Belfast man Robert McCartney.

Mr Durkan is to hold discussions with Bertie Ahern in his constituency office in Drumcondra to consider the next moves towards bringing the peace process back on track.

The Foyle MLA said: “We will be reiterating that it is not enough to recycle flawed approaches and failed deals.”

Mr Durkan added: “And the answer does not lie in new fudges or a divorce of convenience between Sinn Féin and the IRA. Neither are more increments of intent from the Provisional movement, for instance on policing, a substitute for the clear and complete change we need to see.”

The SDLP said the matters they will be bringing to the table included the measures necessary to create an atmosphere positive to restoring the Good Friday Agreement.

He said the two sides would also be discussing all of the issues arising from the campaign for justice by the sisters of Mr McCartney as well as other campaigns.
