Party leaders to discuss FG-Labour election alliance

14/03/2005 - 07:37:18
The prospects of a rainbow alliance presenting itself as an alternative to the Government at the next General Election has reportedly increased following the results of the Meath and Kildare North by-elections.

Reports this morning said the leaders of Fine Gael and the Labour Party were set to discuss a possible alliance following the success of their voting pact in the two by-elections.

The pact helped to get Fine Gael’s Shane McEntee elected ahead of Fianna Fáil’s Shane Cassells in Meath.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Kenny said he was delighted that the pact had worked, while Mr Rabbitte also defended the agreement, saying the people of Ireland wanted a viable choice at the next General Election.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil also lost its only seat in Kildare North when independent candidate Catherine Murphy was elected ahead of Áine Brady in the constituency over the weekend.
