14/03/2005 - 12:52:45
A major investigation was underway today after a family was kidnapped and held hostage overnight by an armed gang of robbers in Dublin.

The masked intruders smashed their way into the family’s home in the northside of the city before taking them at gunpoint to woods in south county Dublin.

Detectives are probing a link between the incident and the robbery of money from a security van in Lucan this morning.

The alarm was raised when the two adults and two children escaped, gardaí said.

A spokesman said detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation have set up a special inquiry into the incident.

“Armed and masked men broke into the family’s home on the northside of the city shortly after 10pm last night and held the family of two adults and two children hostage” he said.

“Sometime during the night the family were brought to Cruagh Wood near Stepaside where some of the family were tied up.

“They freed themselves and went to Stepaside Garda Station this morning shortly before 10am.

“As part of the same incident a security van was robbed in the Strawberry Beds area of Lucan this morning and an amount of money stolen.”
