Prisoners leave Limerick prison rooftop

12/03/2005 - 08:52:49
Five prisoners who escaped from the exercise yard of Limerick prison early yesterday evening to hold a protest on the roof are now back in custody.

The inmates are all from Limerick City. They are serving lengthy sentences but are not believed to be part of the republican movement. They ended their protest this morning at 5.40am.

After almost 12 hours on the roof, they voluntarily made their way down.

It is believed the prisoners were unhappy with the prisoner transfer system at the jail.

Investigations will now begin into how exactly the security breaches occurred.
